ChatGPT as Default Assistant? Exploring the Potential Shift in Android's AI Landscape

ChatGPT

The emergence of advanced generative AI applications, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Copilot, has rendered traditional AI voice assistants like Siri and Google Assistant outdated. Unlike standard phone AI assistants with limited capabilities, these chatbots can engage in human-like conversations, respond to diverse queries, and access real-time information from the internet. OpenAI's ChatGPT app, available on both iOS and Android, is making significant strides in replacing default device assistants, and there are indications that it could potentially replace Google Assistant on Android smartphones.

A recent report from Android Authority reveals that the code within the latest version of the ChatGPT Android app suggests the possibility of setting it as the default assistant on Android devices. ChatGPT version 1.2023.352, released last month, introduced a new activity named ‘com. open.voice.assistant.AssistantActivity.’ While disabled by default, this activity can be manually enabled and launched, appearing as an overlay on the device screen with a similar animation to the ChatGPT app's voice chat mode. This overlay is designed to appear over other apps and allows users to talk to ChatGPT from any screen by invoking the assistant.

However, the assistant mode is still a work in progress. The animation that initiates when launching the activity reportedly isn't complete, and the activity shuts down before interaction with the chatbot is possible. The code necessary for the ChatGPT app to function as a “default digital assistant app” is only partially present, and there are indications that required declarations and metadata tags are missing for it to be set as the default assistant on a device.

The mobile AI assistant landscape is evolving, with Google Assistant and Siri striving to keep up with more advanced chatbots. The ChatGPT app introduced its voice chat feature for all free users on Android and iOS in November, allowing the app to function as a voice assistant. However, free ChatGPT users are currently unable to access real-time web information on the app. In contrast, users can leverage this feature on the GPT-4 powered Bing app or the new standalone Copilot app from Microsoft, launched on both Android and iOS last week.

While Android users currently lack a convenient gesture to bring up the ChatGPT app, similar to accessing Google Assistant, iPhone 15 Pro users can bind the app to the dedicated Action Button for easy activation. Google is actively developing its generative AI capabilities, working on Bard, its own chatbot for Google Assistant, and introducing Gemini, a powerful AI model aimed at competing with OpenAI's GPT-4.
